Las 24 Horas de Le Mans es la carrera más importante del año para Gazoo Racing, la división deportiva de Toyota. Así quedó demostrado ayer, cuando el piloto cordobés ganador en Le Mans, José María "Pechito" López, anunció en conferencia de prensa la llegada del primer GR Corolla a la Argentina (ver nota).
Y esa importancia de la competencia francesa fue ratificada esta mañana, cuando Toyota presentó en Le Mans el primer prototipo del GR Prius. Se trata de la versión deportiva del famoso híbrido de la marca japonesa. Este primer concept tiene un nombre bastante largo. Se llama "Prius 24h Le Mans Centennial GR Edition" y es el homenaje de Toyota Gazoo Racing a los 100 años de la famosa carrera de resistencia.
El auto se exhibirá durante todo el fin de semana de la competencia en el "Manufacturers' Village", esa especie de salón del automóvil a cielo abierto que se encuentra muy cerca de los bóxes y que es uno de los shows paralelos a la competencia, con stands de las principales marcas que expondrán sus novedades ligadas al automovilismo deportivo.
El GR Prius se expondrá en el stand que armó el Ministerio de Turismo de Japón, donde también se expondrá un Mazda MX-30 R-EV. Los dos autos estarán rodeados por obras artísticas de "Le Manga", la historieta japonesa sobre la carrera de 24 horas creada por el artista Masashito Soda.
Para estar a tono con la estética manga, el GR Prius se presenta decorado en un inconfundible livery en tonos blancos y negros, al mejor estilo del famoso Hachi Roku de "Initial D".
Toyota no brindó detalles técnicos del prototipo del GR Prius. Apenas informó que recibió visibles cambios estéticos, con llantas de 18 pulgadas y un agresivo paquete aerodinámico en fibra de carbono. La nueva generación del Prius se presentó el año pasado. La versión más potente tiene tracción integral: combina un motor térmico delantero y uno eléctrico trasero, que le permiten desarrollar una potencia combinada de 223 cv y acelerar de 0 a 100 km/h en 7 segundos (leer más).

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) unveiled today the "Prius 24h Le Mans Centennial GR Edition" concept vehicle at the "Japan. Endless Discovery." joint exhibit being held by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), Mazda Motor Corporation (Mazda), and TGR at the Manufacturers' Village of the centenary of the Le Mans 24 Hours (Le Mans) in France. The new concept vehicle pays tribute to the fabled Le Mans race.
"Japan. Endless Discovery." is a JNTO initiative carried out with Mazda, which, in 1991, fielded the first Japanese car to take the overall title at Le Mans, and TGR, which represents the only Japanese automaker currently competing in Le Mans and which is now on a five-year winning streak. The exhibit, while looking back at the technologies that Japanese automakers have cultivated in motorsports, including Le Mans, introduces the challenge of expanding options toward achieving a carbon-neutral society, such as vehicle electrification, hydrogen energy, and the use of carbon-neutral fuels.
To convey the scenery and culture of Japan, as well as the history of Mazda and Toyota at Le Mans, through Japanese manga, which are highly popular symbols of modern Japanese culture, the exhibit's walls have been decorated by manga artist Masahito Soda*1, who is known for his motorsports-themed capeta manga series.
It was at this exhibition that TGR unveiled for the first time in the world the "Prius 24h Le Mans Centennial GR Edition" concept vehicle, which is based on the latest-generation Toyota Prius and expresses gratitude to Le Mans and France's Automobile Club de l'Ouest, which is the organizer of the race. The concept vehicle achieves excellent driving performance due in part to its exclusive wheels and performance aerodynamic parts inspired by TGR's WEC-competing GR010 HYBRID, and it is due to be displayed at the WEC's Round 6, which is the 6 Hours of Fuji endurance race, and other events.
TGR*2 has been honing hybrid systems at Le Mans and in other WEC races since 2012. The knowledge gained through doing so has been applied to production vehicles such as the Prius, which is synonymous with Toyota's hybrid vehicles. TGR will continue to develop technologies toward realizing a sustainable mobility society through its efforts to make ever-better motorsports-bred cars.
